Last year we told you about a promising startup called Tello that was aiming to change the way consumers give feedback to companies.

Today, the company has launched a suite of services for businesses as well as announced a $2.7M round of funding from True Ventures and Bullpen Capital. Tell previously had raised angel investment from folks like Chris Sacca, Shervin Pishevar, Dave McClure and Ron Conway.

Tello?s current offering allows customers to leave feedback for companies in a more structured way than you?d find on sites like Yelp. By sharing feedback about particular employees at your favorite location, as well as share a quick review with a thumbs up or down. While Yelp is for long-form reviews, Tello captures quick feedback that can help businesses react in real-time.

To support that real-time nature of customer service, Tello has launched a suite of business services including a backend that allows managers to see all of the feedback coming into the service and allow them to interact directly with its customers.

CEO of Tello Joe Beninato had this to say about the new business offerings:

Tello for Business gives companies both big and small a scalable platform to monitor customer feedback and resolve service issues that can have a direct effect on sales.

Tello for Business is available as part of its iOS and Android apps as well as mobile versions that work on any device:

The company is also giving businesses ten digit numbers that customers can text reviews to, as well as mini-sites that they can bring up on their smartphone?s browser. The basic version of the service is available for free, with a premium version available for $99/month per location. This service is definitely geared toward stores with a lot of locations like Wal-Mart or Best Buy, but can work nicely for a privately owned store, bar, or restaurant as well.

Did best actor Oscar winner swear in French?

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

By Courtney Garcia

Best actor Oscar winner Jean Dujardin, may have been able to sneak a curse word into his acceptance speech Sunday night via his native French tongue.

After French actor (and "Dancing With the Stars" vet) Gilles Marini tweeted he?d heard a swear word drop?from the Oscar-winner?s mouth during his?speech, E! Online?questioned Dujardin about the possible verbal slippage. "The Artist" star replied guiltily, ?Uh yeah?I?m sorry.?

Asked on TODAY, Dujardin told host Ann Curry, he was ?over the moon? with excitement after winning the award, that his thank you generally translated to, ?It was amazing, it was incredible,? and that everything he said was PG-rated.

The French excerpt of Dujardin?s speech comes towards the end, when he imagines how the actor he played in "The Artist" might react to the award.

?If George Valentin could speak, he?d say, ?Wow! Putain, genial, merci, formidable, merci beaucoup, I love you!?? The actor screamed enthusiastically.

Translated directly, this means, "Wow! F***, amazing, thank you, incredible, thank you so much, I love you!"

Access Hollywood spoke to Dujardin?s mother, who accompanied him to the show, and had this to say about her son?s language. ?I don?t like, I don?t like [that] he said [it].?

No one from France is gawking, nevertheless. Best director winner, Michel Hazanavicius, who worked with Dujardin on ?The Artist,? adds ?It?s not really a bad word, we always say that in France.?

Dujardin wasn't the only one to drop a swear word on the Oscars stage. Filmmaker TJ Martin, who won the best documentary feature award for football film "Undefeated," was bleeped for calling the win "f------ awesome," but later said "we meant no offense."

Any French speakers out there? Did you notice the word? Tell us on Facebook.

Understanding LGBTQ Domestic Violence: An Interview with ...

By Erin Rook, PQ Monthly

The blogosphere has been abuzz with perspectives (like this one from Yolo Akili) on domestic violence the past few weeks, thanks to Rihanna and Chris Brown?s appearances/awards at The Grammys as well as their newly-released remix collaborations.

I?m still marinating on what it all means for the public discourse on domestic violence, but one thing is clear from the blog comments, tweets, and diversity of reactions ? we could all use some educating. Since most of the commentary focuses on violent acts committed by men against women, I asked local advocate Adrienne Graf a few questions about intimate partner violence in relation to the LGBTQ community.

For some personal perspectives on intimate partner violence, check out the profiles of queer survivors in the February issue of PQ Monthly.

PQ Monthly: Tell us a little bit about your background with intimate partner violence.

Adrienne Graf: I got involved in domestic and sexual violence advocacy in queer, anarchist and punk communities in the early 2000s. I was a part of various short lived and feminist collectives that addressed sexual violence and sexism as well as domestic violence.? My eyes were really opened to the prevalence of queer domestic violence around this time, observing survivors not getting support in my community and abusive behavior and people continued to get supported and praised. It lit a fire inside of me that said, ?I want to talk about this in real ways. I want to support people in my community who are experiencing this.?

I have been working as a campus-based IPV advocate for the past four years at Portland State University. I have been trained by the Attorney General?s Sexual Assault Task force, The NW Network of LGBTQ Survivors, and Portland Women?s Crisis Line for over 90 hours of advocacy specific education. I received my Masters in Social Work in June of 2010 and spent my first year practicum at Portland Women?s Crisis Line working in the Sex Industry Outreach Program and on the crisis line itself. I currently work full time at PSU assisting students in safety planning, reporting to the police, campus security or the campus conduct committee, filing?restraining orders, accessing legal services, accessing housing, and? providing support during sexual assault forensic exams. I facilitate a healthy relationships support group that is open to students of all genders and sexualities every term. Soon, hopefully, I will be providing drop-in advocacy hours at the Queer Resource Center on campus.

PQ: What does intimate partner violence look like in LGBTQ relationships? Are there any good statistic on its prevalence?

Graf: I think IPV looks really similar in some ways in LGBTQ relationships as it does in ?straight relationships.? Queer survivors can experience the same violence, control, manipulation, lethality, isolation, hurt and confusion that non-queer survivors experience. The ways that IPV looks different is that our relationships look different already than what we are taught is ?normal? by the media, our parents, society, etc., so already queer survivors are starting from a great disadvantage. Our relationships are often already ?othered? just by being queer, and being in a relationship with violence is also very ?othering.? Another way violence looks different is identity is often used as a part of the abuse. Sometimes abusers will manipulate or threaten to out a partner. Sometimes abusers will use wrong pronouns to manipulate and silence their partners. Sometimes abusers will use shared/small community to control their partners. Sometimes abusive partners will insult their partners? identity as a form of abuse and control.

[Note: Though Graf didn't speak to prevalence, the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs says that solid statistics are hard to come by due to a lack of research. As a result, many advocates take the perspective that domestic violence occurs in LGBTQ relationships at a similar rate to heterosexual relationships (about 1 in 3). Still, the few studies that have been done paint a very serious picture. The NCAVP reports:

"The most recent significant study, released in 2002, indicated that gay and bisexual men experience abuse in intimate partner relationships at a rate of 2 in 5, one comparable to that of DV experienced by heterosexual women?(see notes 1&2).? Island and Letellier describe it as "the third most severe health problem facing gay men today," behind HIV/AIDS and substance abuse(see note 3).? Among lesbians, a 1985 study by Gwat-Yong Lie and Sabrina Gentlewarrier reported that slightly more than half of 1,109 respondents had been abused by a woman partner in their lifetime?(see note 4).? Several smaller studies seem to support this finding.? Coleman's 1990 study of 90 lesbians, for example, reported that 46.6% had experienced repeated acts of violence, and Ristock's 1994 survey of 113 lesbians reported that 41% been abused in at least one relationship with another woman.

Studies of other populations in the LGBT community have documented even higher rates of abuse over respondents' lifetimes.? The Portland, OR based Survivor Project's 1998 Gender, Violence, and Resource Access Survey of transgender and intersex?(see note 6)?individuals found that 50% of respondents had been raped or assaulted by a romantic partner, though only 62% of these individuals (31% of the total) identified themselves as survivors of domestic violence when asked?(see note 7)."]?

PQ: What are the biggest misconceptions you?ve encountered around intimate partner violence in the LGBTQ community?

Graf: I think the biggest misconception is that abuse does not happen in LGBTQ communities, or that ?so and so couldn?t be abusive, they are such a radical queer!? I have experienced a lot of silence around talking about abusive people in our various queer communities. I think a lot of this has to do with internalized sexism, homophobia, and a whole lot of other internalized oppressions. I think that some of this minimizing on the part of community members can come from a place of trying to protect and control the perception of the community. We are so often told our genders, sexualities, lifestyles, bodies and identities are perverse and wrong that many of us have internalized these messages and fought so hard to be a part of queer community. I think that a lot of denial around violence can often come from not wanting to confront our communities and ourselves.

PQ: What resources are available to help LGBTQ folks who are currently experiencing intimate partner violence or dealing with the repercussions of past abuse??

Graf: Bradley-Angle has a great LGBTQ survivor program. I have been facilitating the Bradley-Angle LGBTQ domestic violence support group (as a second side job) for a year and half now, and I am so appreciative that the group and the program are around for queer survivors. Bradley-Angle also has a LGBTQ Healthy Relationships Group, which has been really successful so far. Both of these groups are free for participants. They also provide advocacy services as well, and their domestic violence shelter is open to survivors of all genders.

If the person seeking resources is a student at PSU, please come to the Women?s Resource Center! Despite our name, we serve survivors of all genders, and I really want to make this space comfortable for the students that we serve. Students can expect to experience LGBTQ-informed and knowledgeable advocacy from a queer advocate!

PQ: What resources exist for LGBTQ abusers?

Graf: I really wish I knew. Someone please get the answer to this question back to me because I really really am invested in creating a space in my community to hold abusive people accountable. I am talking with some members of my particular queer community about a possible town hall discussion type meeting about domestic violence in queer communities, and I think one of the big desires I bring to that meeting is to work on an answer to this very question!

PQ: For those who choose not to take advantage of support groups or other established services, what kinds of self-care can be helpful? Are there any books/websites/other resources you would recommend?

Graf: I really believe that acupuncture can be a helpful tool for trauma recovery. I recently just had a similar interview/conversation with my therapist, Allison Carr, about resources for survivors and how acupuncture can support survivors experiencing longterm effects of trauma exposure. Another great queer acupuncture practitioner in the community that I am aware of is Kristin Dilley at Nightingale Acupuncture and Apothecary. Again, I think that many different acupuncture practitioners would be great, I just happen to know these two personally and know that they are skilled at working with trauma.

I think any sort of self care that leaves someone feeling safe is good self care. This could be different for everyone. Maybe for someone it is walking their dog, taking a bath, or reading a book. If you are currently experiencing a trigger, taking deep breaths and practicing a grounding exercise can be helpful. Do to the wonder of the internet, you can now Google various grounding techniques and get tutorials on the internet or stream a podcast of a guided mediation.

Self care might mean establishing boundaries in your communities, with your friends, and with yourself and not apologizing for that. It might look like spending more time with supportive people and creating boundaries with people that don?t have your best interests in mind.

PQ: How can we be strong allies to queer survivors (and survivors of all kinds)?

Graf: Listen to someone when they tell you they are experiencing violence. Listen, even if it is uncomfortable, even if the person they are telling you is hurting them is someone you cannot imagine would ever be abusive. Just because that is not your experience does not mean that it isn?t true, and often, abusive people are charismatic, well-liked and hold positions of power and popularity in social groups. This can be a part of an abusive dynamic, and something that really silences survivors.

Another way we can be allies to survivors is to interrupt victim blaming in ourselves and others. We are constantly getting victim-blaming rhetoric shoved in our face ?? turn on any TV, movie, or tune into any conversation on the bus. It is important that we are vigilant about interrupting this and talking about it. I cannot stress it enough! I also think we need to think about the concept of beloved community. I think the most loving thing we can do for our friends is to have conversations when we see them exhibiting behaviors that make us feel concerned or alarmed. It should not always be up to the survivor to name abusive behavior. If we see it in the people we care about, it is an act of love to tell them that the way they are behaving is not okay.

PQ: How do we go about creating a culture of accountability around intimate partner violence in the LGBTQ community?

Graf: As I mentioned, I have been on the survivor support end of this work, so I don?t have any quick answers for this question, although I could probably tell you a lot of accountability attempts that have NOT worked. That being said, I am really invested in figuring this out with other people, so I hope someone out there has some answers. Also, I think what I was saying before about interrupting victim-blaming, supporting survivors, holding uncomfortable truths, and having loving and honest conversations about behavior can be a start towards accountability.

PQ: Is there anything else you think folks should know about IPV in the LGBTQ community?

Graf: Survivors and abusers are all around you. Some abusers are survivors themselves. I don?t say this to be scary or dramatic, but the level of denial that many LGBTQ survivors experience from their friends, communities, and social circles is not working in our favor. In order to address IPV in our communities, we need to be able to see it. We need to take a deep breath before going forward. We don?t have any models in mainstream society for IPV accountability; like so many struggles before us we are creating what we need without much guidance. We need to check in with our intentions. We need to support LGBTQ survivors because they are our best friends, our partners, our roommates, our coworkers, ourselves.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you or someone you know needs help with an abusive relationship, call Bradley Angle?s 24-hour hotline at 503-281-2442.

Creating Your Own Tinted Moisturizer | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Have you been looking for the best tinted moisturizer? While there are plenty of excellent tinted moisturizers on the market, you may find that some are too dark, too light, too heavy, or not moisturizing enough ? the potential list of problems is virtually endless. If you still haven?t found your perfect tinted moisturizer, you can add this beauty secret to your skincare routine. Here?s how to create your own tinted moisturizer that?s perfectly customized to match your skin?s needs.

The great news is that the best tinted moisturizer for your skin type and skin tone may already be waiting for you in your makeup bag. Simply mix some of your foundation with your moisturizer and voila; a tinted moisturizer that?s personally customized for your skin.

One favorite method for making your own tinted moisturizer at home is to use your favorite moisturizer and mix it with mineral makeup such as Bare Essentials Bare Minerals. High quality mineral makeup almost appears to dissolve when mixed with moisturizer and when you rub this homemade tinted moisturizer on your face; it creates light, even coverage as well as the soft glow characteristic of mineral makeup. Not into minerals? Normal liquid foundations also work great as tinted moisturizers when mixed with your face lotion.

One of the simplest and least messy ways to mix your own tinted moisturizer is to use a mini plastic cosmetics spatula (you can buy this at most beauty supply stores). These little spatulas make scooping out powdered mineral makeup and mixing it into the moisturizer a lot easier and they are also great for scraping that last bit of product from the bottom of a cosmetics jar.

Another advantage to mixing your own tinted moisturizer is that you can always adjust the color. If you need more coverage, add more foundation. Looking for a tinted moisturizer to match and enhance your tanned, summer glow? Just mix in a little powdered bronzer into your homemade tinted moisturizer.

Auburn's Katrynia Todd snags second Washington State girls wrestling title | Prep girls wrestling

Auburn girls wrestling champion Katrynia Todd knows a thing or two about celebrating.

With the roar of the Mat Classic XXIV crowd at the Tacoma Dome still ringing in her head after she?d captured, Todd had one thing on her mind.

?I went to McDonald?s,? Todd said. ?I had a McFlurry.?

Never has a frozen treat tasted so sweet to a well-deserving athlete.

Todd ? who finished first in the 140-pound class last season ? cut a swath through her competition at the meet, finishing her prep career with a pin at three minutes, nine seconds over Othello?s Allesha Reyes in the title match last Saturday.

According to her coach, Erik Opel, Todd got off to a rough start at the tournament before pinning down her second straight state title.

?She was concerned about her weight and hadn?t really eaten a lot,? Opel said. ?Plus there were probably some first-day jitters. But once she got something to eat, we got back on track, wrestling.?

After defeating Columbia River?s Samantha Schoene with a 15-3 major decision in the first round, however, Todd?s training and confidence took over.

?I think I was more experienced at the whole state thing this year,? Todd said. ?I was more used to all the people staring at you and all the pressure. I absolutely feel like I was a better wrestler this year. I feel like I went out there and took care of business.?

In the second round, Todd defeated Lacy Cannon of Mount Baker with a 6-1 decision, setting up a meeting with South Kitsap?s Amberlee Brasch on Saturday morning.

?My semifinals match was the hardest because it was 1-1 through three rounds before I got her down,? Todd said.

Once on the mat, Todd ground down Brasch, maneuvering her into a pin at the 5:52 mark.

The win set up a showdown against Reyes for the title, a match that Todd controlled from start to finish.

?The biggest difference from last year to this was she was a much more complete wrestler,? Opel said. ?She really worked on developing a lot more skill. I think that was a big difference for us this year.?

Now that Todd is done with her prep wrestling career, she has mixed feelings.

?I had all this pressure on me, so it just felt good to be done,? she said. ?But it?s kind of sad that I won?t wrestle in high school anymore, but hopefully I?ll wrestle in college.?

Todd already has received interest from wrestling programs at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore., Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., and Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Auburn wrestling head coach Dennis Herren appreciates what Todd has brought to the program, regardless of where she winds up.

?I honestly couldn?t be more inspired by Katrynia Todd,? he said. ?Both of her last matches were tough, but she broke them and pinned them. All of Auburn wrestling needs to be grateful to her for bringing us a state championship for the program this year.?

US tornado chasers prepare for high season

With the month of March looming, United States tornado chasers are already watching the Southeast as a nasty storm brews with the potential to spin off a batch of tornadoes.

But if funnel clouds develop Thursday or Friday as some forecasters believe, they won't be the first. This tornado season got an early and deadly start in late January when two people were killed by separate twisters in Alabama. Preliminary reports showed 95 tornadoes struck last month, compared with 16 in January during a particularly stormy 2011.

The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months, but forecasting these storm seasons is even more imprecise than predicting hurricane seasons. Tornadoes are too small and too short-lived for scientists to make seasonal predictions. They don't develop like blizzards and hurricanes, which are easier to project.

Difficult to forecast
They pop in and pop out. The storms that give them birth may last only a few hours. Hurricanes and blizzards are lumbering beasts that spend days moving across the satellite maps. When a hurricane approaches, coastlines get days warning to evacuate. With a tornado, if the weather service can let people know 20 minutes in advance, it's considered a victory.

"The Joplin (Missouri) tornado (that killed 158 people last May) wasn't violent until just about the time it got to the hospital," said Harold Brooks, a research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storms Laboratory, in Norman, Oklahoma. "Even when you're in the field, there are still times when you're surprised by the intensity of the event and how quickly it started."

Story: Joplin tornado came with terrifying speed

If a forecast for a hurricane or blizzard is off by a mile, it's still bad weather. But a mile difference means no damage in a tornado, Brooks said: "It's so much finer in time and space on the tornado, it does make it a harder problem."

It takes a piece of debris only a few seconds to fly around an entire tornado; it takes hours to circle a hurricane. But tornadoes, though smaller, can have stronger winds. Since 1950, there have been 58 tornadoes in the U.S. with winds exceeding 200 mph; six last year alone. Only three hurricanes have made U.S. landfall with winds more than 155 mph.

And forecasters are telling the Southeast and heartland to get ready again.

"It looks like this week we're moving into a slightly more active dynamic pattern," said warning meteorologist Greg Carbin at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, also in Norman, Oklahoma.

'Definitely more unpredictable'
The percolating Southeastern storm is proof of exactly how hard meteorologists have it. On Tuesday evening, Carbin said, "We're kind of expecting it to be a fairly significant event" and the storm center's website had a small red swath for potential severe storms with tornadoes.

By Wednesday morning, the storm center's forecast was much less clear. While the storm looks bad with potential for tornadoes, one of the key ingredients ? unstable upper level air ? is not quite behaving as predicted. So that means forecasters have less an idea of when and where the bad weather and potential twisters will hit, said Corey Mead, a meteorologist at the center.

By Wednesday afternoon, the storm prediction center massively expanded its Thursday watch area to include Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia and parts of Virginia, the Carolinas and most of Florida.

"A lot of things have to come together at once to have a tornadic storm and the skill at forecasting all those things is near zero," said Howard Bluestein, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. "They are definitely more unpredictable."

All this comes on the heels of one of the worst tornado years in U.S. history. Tornadoes in 2011 started the earliest ever ? New Year's Day ? killing 550 people, injuring 5,400 and causing $10 billion (euro7.56 billion) in damage over the year, the most in U.S. history. The 2011 season had the most tornadoes in a single day and a single month on record.

Video: Twister terror caught on tape (on this page)

But if you ask tornado experts what that means for this year, they'll answer that they just don't know. Later this summer, meteorologists will meet in a special conference to try to figure out how to do that type of longer-term tornado prediction. And the National Weather Service is installing new radar for live forecasting, tracking and distinguishing of tornadoes. Those together mean that maybe in 2020 or so, meteorologists will be able to say watch out this season or relax a bit ? but not just yet, Brooks said.

A new study by Columbia University professor Michael Tippett points out potential factors ? vertical wind shear, updraft and a type of rainfall ? that might help for long-range tornado forecasts.

Another factor is La Nina, the flip side of El Nino. It's a cooling of the central Pacific Ocean. Scientists have noticed a correlation between strong La Ninas and active tornado seasons ? including last year. But it's not so simple or clear-cut, Tippett and others say. The current La Nina is weakening so much it shouldn't be a factor this year, several experts said.

The new radar, called dual polarization, allows meteorologists to see through rain and dark and be sure if high winds are a tornado. In the past, meteorologists had to wait for ground confirmation. This won't help with long-term forecasts but could save lives in real-time because forecasters can be more certain in their warnings, said National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Schlatter.

The-Dream To Drop 'Kill The Lights' Single Today

The-Dream is ready to take his show on the road. In preparation for his Love IV album, the singer/songwriter is getting ready to embark on a new tour, and on Thursday (February 23), he's planning to drop a new song to commemorate the run.

The Kill the Lights Tour will begin March 11 in New York, and The-Dream is dropping his new single of the same name. "The name of the song is actually 'Kill the Lights,' featuring my artist Casha," he said on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."

The song will be featured on the upcoming Love IV, which the ATL crooner estimates will be out in the spring or summer — he doesn't want to put an exact date on it. The-Dream already dropped the LP's first single, "ROC," earlier this year, and in addition to his new LP, he wants to concentrate on grooming Casha, who made her first appearance on The-Dream's free digital album 1977 singing a remake of Minnie Riperton's "Love, Stop Making a Fool of Me."

"I'm just channeling and building her the right way and giving her the right time," he said of his new artist. "I'm not trying to get, 'She better come out and sell this'; I'm not doing that. She's too talented for that."

Instead of creating microwave hits with Casha, The-Dream would rather take his time. "She's going to sell on her own, she's great, she'll be fine," he said. "I'm trying to slow-bake it."

What are you expecting from The-Dream's new music? Let us know in the comments!

Compassion and Choices ? A father's last days

By Steve Lopez
Los Angeles Times
February 18, 2012

The hospice nurse said on Tuesday that my father could be gone within 24 hours. It was no surprise. He?d been bedridden for days, and on the list of 10 signs that death is near, he had six or seven.

And so I headed north, to the Bay Area, to be with my family. And it?s true what they say ? that even if you prepare yourself for the inevitable, and know there?ll be mercy in death, the imminent loss of a loved one crushes you in ways you don?t anticipate.

My father lay in a hospital bed in a bedroom of the house I grew up in, sleeping on his side, clutching the rails as if holding on against the tug of death. Losing him forever had been no more than a concept until this moment. Now I was watching him die, and the family photos on the wall spoke both of our memories and our mortality.

His arms trembled, his breathing jumped and fell. He?d open his eyes briefly, halfway acknowledge us, then drop back into deep sleep.

By chance, I had been at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Tuesday when my father took this latest turn. I was sharing my family?s experience at a meeting of the hospital?s End of Life committee. The medical staff is searching for ways to better help families make hard decisions, limit patient suffering and avoid costly medical procedures that extend dying more than they prolong life.

?There?s a fair amount of unnecessary and inappropriate end-of-life care that?s given,? said Dr. Glenn Braunstein, who heads the committee and thinks doctors need to have earlier, frank conversations with families about the limits of medicine, and about the need for patients to put their end-of-life wishes down on paper.

Dr. Beth Karlan, a Cedars oncologist, said she sometimes advises terminally ill patients to enjoy their remaining days doing what they really want to do, rather than subject themselves to some chemo regimens with a 10% success rate and severely limiting side effects.

Last week, a California HealthCare Foundation poll suggested that 82% of Californians think they should make their wishes known in advance, but fewer than 25% have done so. Nearly 80% said that if they were seriously ill, they?d want to talk to their doctors about end-of-life care, but fewer than 10% do.

We?re just not very good at the messy business of dying. But as I mentioned to the doctors at Cedars, there are times when dying can get complicated. Should my dad, 83, have had hip surgery last year after falling down in the street, toppling over with his walker and pulling my mother, 82, down with him?

This was a man who had been suffering from strokes and heart disease for two years. His world was closing in on him; he was unable to do the things he loved most, like taking family vacations.

At Cedars, a doctor on the committee suggested I shouldn?t have approved the hip surgery. It?s that kind of procedure that?s driving up medical costs without necessarily producing good outcomes, he said.

He may be right, and I?ve second-guessed that decision, because my dad couldn?t walk very well before the surgery and has taken only a few steps since. But the alternative was to let him die in a hospital bed with a splintered joint, drugged into oblivion to kill the pain. The family decision was surgery.

Later, when he could no longer swallow without choking, my father and the rest of us decided against the doctor-recommended feeding tube. Too expensive, too invasive, too little to gain. And he left the nursing home to spend his final days in his own house.

It was hard on my mother and sister, the primary caregivers, with backup from my brother. Hospice staff isn?t always there, and hiring backup help is both expensive and at times intrusive. I?ll never know how my mother and sister, who have their own health problems, handled the daily task of moving my father from bed to wheelchair to bathroom, determined to grant him his last wish ? to die at home.

?Watching him die is torture,? said my sister, who had been looking into his ghostly eyes for days, hopes raised by a sudden surge and then dashed as he fell back into a near comatose state.

A doctor at Cedars, Lawrence Maldonado, had told me on Tuesday that our cultural fear of death often keeps us at a distance from the process of dying ? it?s easy enough to let the nursing home handle it. But there?s something powerful and life-affirming in facing down those fears, despite the heart-wrenching difficulty my sister described.

She and my mother have never been braver as they comforted my father at every turn, gently repositioning him in bed, dabbing at his parched lips with a sponge, cleaning him, talking to him, singing to him, thanking him, holding his hand.

?Hey Tony,? my mother would say, ?remember when?? And then she?d tell stories. Remember when they were high school sweethearts, sneaking off to the movie theater to hug and kiss in the dark?

My brother had suggested it might be time for me to write our father?s obituary for the local paper, but I?d been putting it off. I?ve been writing newspaper stories for nearly 40 years, many of them about death, but I felt I wouldn?t know how to begin this one, or do the subject justice.

My father was the youngest of six children born to Spanish immigrants, a scrapper, a fighter, an athlete, the last surviving member of the brood. He could be stubborn at times, and difficult. But the blue-collar working man stayed with that high school sweetheart for 63 years, provided for his family, and unconditionally loved his children and grandchildren.

Twenty-four hours came and went, with my father still breathing. At times he acknowledged us and whispered a few words. He survived a second day, and then a third. The doctor came to the house and said it wouldn?t be much longer.

My dad, as I wrote this, still had a hand on the rails, but he was beginning to let go.

Ubuntu's full desktop OS coming to multi-core Android devices (update: video)

What the Atrix 4G first promised, it looks like the folks at Canonical may deliver. Think back to CES 2011, when Motorola showed us a future where our phone was the only computing device we would need -- only to leave us wanting when its webtop app didn't deliver the requisite functionality for such a future. Well, it turns out Ubuntu now runs on multi-core Android devices and your handset can grant a full desktop experience when docked with a display and a keyboard. It's a customized version of Ubuntu that plays nice with Android, the two OS's sharing data and services while running simultaneously. So, you can still access telephony and texts from the Ubuntu environment while enjoying all the computing capabilities it has to offer, including: Ubuntu TV, virtualization tools for running Windows applications, desktop web browsers, and Ubuntu apps built for ARM. It isn't clear exactly what hardware you'll need to run Ubuntu on a handset, but Canonical has said it works on multi-core devices with HDMI and USB connections. We'll get more info next week when it's shown off at MWC, but until then you'll have to settle for the source below and PR after the break.

Update: Have a look at the slick integration in a video we've embedded after the break.

[Thanks, Bekira]

The Other Mormon Candidate

Yeah Samak?, on the other hand, is a candidate nearly all Mormons can get behind. And many have. Utah?s conservative Republican governor, Gary Herbert, endorses Samak? in a video that appears on the candidate?s website, calling Samak? ?a wonderful man and an inspired leader.? Next to his endorsement is one from Warner Woodworth, a professor at BYU?s Marriott School of Management who has openly questioned Romney?s dedication to the Mormon gospel because of his lack of professed care for the poor. Woodworth praises Samak? for promoting the kind of social entrepreneurship he himself has long championed; Samak?, he says, wants to ?find ways to build economic self-reliance from the bottom up instead of the top down.?

Restaurant Owners Can't Ignore Safety and Security Issues, Says ...

So you?ve got a new restaurant ? are you prepared for a safety or security crisis? Preparing for a crisis involves a lot more than getting a good liability insurance policy.

Restaurant Expert Witness, Restaurant Consultant, and CEO, Howard Cannon believes that the restaurant industry needs to pay closer attention to safety and security, stating, ?Government agencies recommend monthly safety meetings with staff and management, but very few follow that advice. Too often, there is poor training and lack of focus on safety and security for customers or the restaurant staff; and, there is little or no commitment to following up on the training that does exist.?

Cannon says, ?In any industry, there are going to be events that may not be avoided. However, to reduce risks, restaurant management and employees should be trained in security and safety measures. Training typically revolves around security discussions, review of policies and procedures that have been put in place to minimize risk, and a combination of follow-up and monitoring to ensure compliance. He adds, ?Having cameras in good locations, appropriate locks, and a well-lit facility can reduce the likelihood of problems.?

Mr. Cannon believes that those in the restaurant industry need to focus on managing their risks whenever possible, stating, ??What-if? situations are supposed to be thought out ahead of time. Having a ready response for virtually every conceivable situation helps enormously . . . What if your staff didn?t lock the back door after dark? What if only one employee closed out the restaurant and left at 11 pm with the bank deposit? . . . You can easily become ?sitting ducks? ripe for accidents, or worse.?

The restaurant industry faces another profound security risk, and that is the risk from within. Mr. Cannon encourages restaurant owners to protect their assets, stating, ?It?s a shocking fact, but 44% of restaurant employees steal from the establishment and 80% of theft is from management personnel. The industry has historically been buried with alcohol and drug abuse. Getting rid of that liability will reduce the likelihood of bigger problems.? Cameras can be a good preventative measure for this problem. They also act as a deterrent to would-be embezzlers and to would-be criminals from the outside. Additionally, when there are infractions, they help establish proof for criminal investigations, prosecutions, and other legal matters. Do restaurant customers like cameras though? Cannon believes that most of them do. ?It depends on the people, but most customers will feel safer in establishments with cameras and a security system,? he says. ?If something does happen, they have the confidence that the incident will be recorded and that record will protect them. People are looking for that kind of protection these days.

Howard Cannon is a highly recognized restaurant expert witness, consultant, analyst, and speaker. He is the author of The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Starting a Restaurant? ? found in 76 countries around the globe. Mr. Cannon is the CEO of Restaurant Consultants of America and Restaurant Expert Witness, and can be reached at 800-300-5764 or via the web at RestaurantConsultantsOfAmerica.com or RestaurantExpertWitness.com.
